What is PHTRU?

Public Health Training and Research Unit (PHTRU) is a multidisciplinary unit that conduct research, training and advocacy activities related to Public Health. PHTRU is based in Nutrition and Health Center for Training and Research (NHCTR) at Ahfad University for Women (AUW).

Our Mission

To contribute with the global, regional and local efforts to prevent diseases, promote health and improve human health and quality of life through conducting research, building capacity, advocacy and innovation..



Researchers at PHTRU conduct research as well as implement and evaluate projects in infectious diseases, global health, maternal and child health, health systems research, social and behavioral determinants of health, environmental and occupational health, climate change and health, public health nutrition and non-communicable diseases.


In collaboration with partners including ministries of health, INGOs, NGOs and academic institutions, we are developing different training courses in Public Health targeting researchers, health care professionals and students.


PHTRU will lead and support the development and dissemination of compendiums of published evidence to drive advocacy activities. Advocacy activities include building and managing lobbies, coalitions, and networks of scientists and other advocates for the inclusion and adopting of new public health interventions into actions.
