AUW Master Program in Gender, Multicultural and Migration Studies (GMMS)
Recently, in 2008, the RIG/DPR has adopted a new strategy of outreach for creating partnership with regional and oversees universities. The fruits of an educational link program under the title of “Implementation of Migration Multicultural Studies” (IMMS) in East Africa was the starting point. The program was initiated jointly with University of Oldenburg, North Germany, and supported by the European Commission aiming to encourage North-South universities collaboration and partnerships. The program has established link with three universities in East Africa, namely, University of Makrere, Department of Gender and Women Studies, Uganda; Ahfad university for Women, The Regional Institute of Gender, Diversity, Peace and Rights , Sudan; and, university of Mbarara, faculty of development studies. The institute has effectively undertaken the initiative for establishing the master program with the intention of opening venues for applicants to indulge into in-depth studies related to gender and migration studies with special emphasis on migration and multiculturalism.
DESCRIPTION
The Msc. program is the first in its contents and structure in Sudan and at Ahfad University for Women. It will apply an academic system of higher education that promote better venues for intercultural relations and understanding of the global challenges in respect to gender and migration and related fields of academia with especial reference to African Migration. It is aiming to cover all aspects of migration and its related issues, covering the wide dimensions of migration and its implications, challenge of management process, and crisis prevention policies for gender-
This program is centered on serving two main issues: one, adoption of Bologna system of European teaching credit hours (ETC). First : The system will allow both students and instructors to set a clear course plan in which the ETC are distributed between lecturing, individual reading, group work, individual written assignments, and, exam. Second, the bologna system will allow students from Europe to enroll in the institute program fully or partially. This opens chances for competition between students, enhance interrelations, and, permit exchange of knowledge and experiences between students and staff; and, hence promote quality assurance of the graduate studies in the institute.
In addition, the strategy of the program is to enroll students for a master degree by courses for two semesters, then, they submit a dissertation based on fieldwork for another two semesters.
