General Education Program

Apply for a GE course

For the purpose of approving a course for GE designation for a first time, a course instructor provides the course syllabus and answers an online questionnaire about how each PLO is addressed and assessed in the course.

For renewal of existing GE courses, instructors are asked to provide a course portfolio that includes diverse course material and samples of students’ work.

The evaluator estimates the degree of coverage of each PLO (High, Average, Low, No coverage) according to the syllabus and to the online questionnaire for new courses, and indicates the levels of coverage of PLOs in course content and students’ work according to course portfolios for course renewals. This review information can be used to accept, reject, or revise a course, and to determine the time of the next course review. Transfer courses follow the same approval process of new GE courses, but using only a course syllabus.

Course Submission and Evaluation

Certification of New GE Courses:

For the purpose of approving a new GE course, a course instructor must apply for GE designation by filling and submitting an online questionnaire for the relevant GE area, and by providing a detailed course syllabus.

The GE certification of a newly submitted course is valid for one year, and recertification is required at the end of the first year using a portfolio, where the course can be renewed for an additional three years.

If a course addresses more than one GE area, an application must be submitted for each area. It is expected that sections of the same course achieve the same learning outcomes. Therefore, an application for GE designation is required per course and not per course section.

Re-certification of GE Courses:

The recertification of exiting GE courses is done at the end of the first year and every three years. The GE director will notify instructors about re-certification of their courses and will request a course portfolio which includes a syllabus, a sample of instructor material and a sample of students’ work such as assignments, presentations, projects, etc.  When recertifying a GE course with multiple sections, the course coordinator can provide a course portfolio or one instructor teaching any section can be contacted to provide samples of students’ work.

Deletion of GE courses:

The designation of GE courses can be stopped either when requested by the instructor and the chair, or as a result of the course re-evaluation.
