Yousif Badri Civic Engagement International Prize ceremony 2018

On the evening of Wednesday, 12 December 2018, AUW held its third annual ceremony for the Yousif Badri Civic Engagement International Prize (YbCEIP). The prize is dedicated to acknowledge and reward projects aimed at maximizing civil engagement. The first prize winner for 2018 was awarded to Mbarara University for Science and Technology, Uganda, for their “Student-Community Twinning Project” that aims to create students as change agents with holistic practical skills for future employability and self-reliance through an engaged community based training where students interact, diagnose community needs, and work with their community to generate appropriate interventions for socio-economic transformation. The second prize was awarded to Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, for their program “Bridging gaps and building opportunities: Reflections on my experience of engaging in community development in Azena” which focuses on promoting and engaging the community in planning and building infrastructure. The third prize was awarded to El-Imam El-Mahdi University, Sudan, for their program “Education First” which aims  at raising awareness on the importance of education in achieving the desired goals at both the individual and community level, correcting misconceptions about education, especially females’ education, modifying negative trends that link education engagement with job creation, raising the level of interest in academic education versus traditional religious education, and finally to actively contribute to the campaign of eradicating illiteracy among elders and housewives.
