AUW Students Win 2nd Place in the EEG’s Annual Inter College Environmental Speaking Competition

 

As climate change and the environment take centre stage remaining one of the most pressing issues, many bodies and organizations have initiated numerous competitions and platforms to address climate change and the state of the environment and how related issues can be addressed and managed.

Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) is one of those bodies that have taken interest in shedding light on environment issues. Established in 1991 EEG is a professional working group devoted to protecting the environment through the means of education, action programs and community involvement.

EEG is actively encouraged and supported by concerned local and federal government agencies. It is the first environmental NGO in the world to be ISO 14001 certified and the only organization of its kind in the UAE with accredited status to the United Nations Convention to Combating Desertification (UNCCD) and the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP).

On the 23rd and 24th of November 2020 the EEG held its’ 20th Annual Inter College Environmental Speaking Competition, as Ahfad University for Women (AUW) students remain prominent participants in different arenas, 5 students from different schools at AUW have competed against other students from various international universities.

The competition themed ‘Assert Your Speech for Green Outreach’ was divided into 4 topics spread out between two days, the first day addressed; ‘Biodiversity Restoration – Who’s Responsibility’ and ‘Sustainable Tourism is a Responsible Tourism’, while the second day included the following topics; ‘The 6th Mass Extinction – Is It Upon Us?’ and ‘Resource Efficiency and Climate Change – Actions Required’.

AUW students participated in the first topic ‘Sustainable Tourism is a Responsible Tourism’; amongst them were Basma Mahmoud, Reham Abdelrahman, Bayan Adil, Fadwa Khalafallah and Areej Ali.

This year's team, composed of intelligent and well-spoken young women with their coordinator, Professor Salah, rose to the challenge and presented a brilliant project centred on the rehabilitation of Dinder National Park in Sudan per their chosen topic of Sustainable Tourism is Responsible Tourism.

With ten minutes to give, they convinced the jury through a Skype call and snatched the second runner up in Sustainable Tourism is Responsible Tourism with the overall final results pending.

For the fourth year in a row, a group from AUW has been among the top three when facing contestants from universities as varied and diverse as the American University of RAK, Alzaytoonah University of Jordan, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the American University of Sharjah, SP Jain School of Global Management, and Middlesex University and others.

In the words of Fadwa Khalafallah Mohammed, one of the speakers, "This experience was a small journey full of excitement and creativity. My team and I are proud to have been a part of it and to have won 2nd Place in the face of such capable competitors. Thank you to AUW for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity".
