TESOL Sudan Conference Hosted by Ahfad University
More than 250 teachers of English eagerly gathered in Awatif Imam Hall at Ahfad University on July 23rd, 2016. They came from different backgrounds, positions, and levels of experience to participate in TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) Sudan’s 6th Annual Conference. TESOL Sudan is a non-profit professional organization for teachers of English that encourages professional development and improvement of teaching practices, as well as provides opportunities for research and collaboration. The conference this year was titled, ELT in Sudan: From Brain Drain, and aimed to promote collaboration between expatriate Sudanese teachers and local teachers. Dr. Aymen Elsheikh, Vice President of TESOL Sudan, and Dr. Ishraga Bashir, President of TESOL Sudan, lead the attendees in interesting discussions among themselves and with expatriate teachers. Throughout the day-long conference, six different lectures were presented by professors working outside Sudan, yet returning to share their experience and knowledge on this occasion. Topics included effective practices for student engagement, classroom management, and lesson planning, among others. At the end of the day, these English teachers walked away with a certificate of completion as well as a wealth of new information applicable in the practice of English language teaching.
