Establishment

Welcome to the School of Psychology and Pre-School Education at Ahfad University for Women.
We were the first established specialized School of Psychology in Sudan (1967) and are currently one of the largest and most prestigious. Our school is proud of the combination of tradition and excellence that characterizes our research and curriculum.
Our graduates have a conspicuous record of success: many are now in educational, health and clinical settings around the country and world wide.
We offer undergraduate degrees in Counselling and Health Psychology and Early Childhood Education. We also offer one postgraduate MSc. degree and research degrees leading to PhD qualification.

The School Mission

The school of psychology embraced the unique vision of Ahfad University for women whereby the school strives to graduate skilled, professional female psychologist who can provide assistance, guidance on an individual, group and community level within a wide range of interdisciplinary fields related to psychology specialization; hence, improving the mental and psychological well being of the community.

Academic Program - An Approximate Overview for Students Enrolling From 2010

The school operates on a semester system a total of 10 semesters.

In the first 5 semesters students cover a variety of general courses in psychology, sociology, education and research methods. By semester 6 the students choose between the two sub specializations Counseling and Health Psychology (CHP) and Early Childhood Education (ECE). Upon successful completion of the 10 semesters the student is awarded a bachelor's of arts degree with honors the total required credits for graduation are 153.


Specializations mission

Early Childhood Education (ECE) Mission

ECE is practicum in its nature. Student- centered learning experience is the main goal of the program. Practical experience and class participation is a major aspect in all the courses offered in ECE specialization. Besides, like all students of AUW, ECE students and graduates are looked at as community change agents who are specialized in both ECE and Psychology and so considered devoted to children's needs and matters.

Counseling and Health Psychology (CHP) Mission

The mission of the CHP program is to provide learning-centered experiences that prepare students for professional careers in counselling by striving for excellence in teaching, research, and service. The School fosters graduates who are informed, responsible practitioners and principled, expert leaders who are committed to diversity, ethical, reflective decision-making, professional growth and identity. The program ensures that graduates are qualified to satisfy the growing needs of the therapeutic and health sectors in the Sudan and region.


Specializations

Students may specialize in three areas:

  • Early Childhood Education (ECE)
  • Counseling and Health Psychology (CHP)
  • Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)

Training of students takes place — depending on specialization in:

  • Mental health hospitals
  • Centers for the treatment of people with severe mental health problems
  • Kindergartens
  • Special education institutes
  • Elementary and secondary schools


Requirements for the Completion of Bachelor

To complete the Bachelor's Degree in the School of Psychology and Pre-School Education the student must pass all courses.
The student must also fulfill the practical training requirements in one or more of the following areas related to her specialization:

  • Early Childhood Centers (ECE)
  • Special Education Institutions
  • Mental Health Hospitals (CHP)
  • Centers for the care of patients living with chronic diseases
  • Elementary and Secondary Schools (CHP & TEFL)
  • Field Trips (Rural Extension)
  • Elementary schools

In addition, the student must pass all the University required courses.
