World Mental Health Day 2019

This year’s theme for World Mental Health Day #WMHD was Suicide Prevention. AUW celebrated the day with guest speaker Dr. Hala AlMalik from Ahfad Trauma Center and Miss Noor from Shama’a Organization for orphan children. Other speakers included meditation expert Mohammed Bukhari and yoga expert Amna AlFadil. The Psychology Student Association organized a number of activities that included a theatrical play and a discussion about the role of religion and culture as protective and risk factors for suicide.
Finally, a highly interactive and responsive audience completed the day with an elaboration discussion and Q and A. The discussion flourished when addressing cultural protective and risk factors for suicide, specifically pertaining to gender roles and expectations. The heat emerged once more while discussing the role of religion in mental health. Where do community healers and Sheikhs come into play when it comes to mental health?

Together towards a healthier community.
